'38 Ford #2

"'38 Ford #2"

Another of my favorite subjects - old rusty automobiles. This image is an abstract created from the old '38 Ford pickup I discovered on Boliver some time back. I still haven't been able to get back down that way to see if it was lost when Ike destroyed almost all of Boliver Peninsula. I guess some part of me hopes this old heap of metal survived, although in reality, I'm sure it's long gone....like so many things from that era.

Henny #11

"Henny #11"
This image is another of my favorite rusty automobile photographs. I discovered this old Henny Packard hearse sitting beside a souvenir shop in Tombstone, Arizona - but it had a Texas tag on it from the 50s or 60s. This shot was a finalist in the Photographer's Forum 2008 Best of Photography Annual.

Trashed

"Trashed"
Today's image is of an old International pickup - part of an International truck "graveyard" I discovered in East Texas a while back. Most of the trucks, like this one, have been there long enough for vegetation to grow up around and inside them. Old rusty cars, trucks, tractors - all favorites of mine for photography. This image was part of City Art Gallery's "Art and Garbage" show. Hope you enjoy it.

Sloth

"Sloth"

With a return to Costa Rica quickly approaching, I find myself thinking of that beautiful country and the wonderful wildlife found there. Perhaps my favorite creature from that part of the world is the sloth. Prehistoric in appearance, the sloth is a most unusual animal who spends most of it's life in the tops of trees. They move so slowly that all kinds of opportunistic organisms take up residence on their fur. Since sloths sleep most of the time, getting a good view of one's sweet face is a real treat.

Hutong Poodle

"Hutong Poodle"

For centuries city dwellers in China have lived in hutongs - little communities built around a common area. This Beijing hutong was comprised of ramshackled dwellings whose doors opened up onto a narrow alley leading to a communal restroom and showers. The hutongs stand in stark contrast to the newer high-rise apartment houses that are springing up in Beijing, and those who live in them are among the poorest of Chinese citizens. This perfectly coiffed poodle riding in the basket of this woman's bicycle seemed very out of place.

Kermitta

"Kermitta"
Since it's been raining for days here in Dallas, I thought I'd end the week with an image of a creature who may still be enjoying it. This bullfrog was photographed in a friend's pond a while back. I got the shot by lying on my stomach and leaning out over the edge of the pond. My efforts were rewarded with several good images. I prefer to think this frog is a female - hence the name "Kermitta".
Thanks for visiting my blog and have a great weekend - I've heard it may be sunny!

City Garage

"City Garage"
This digitally manipulated photograph won an Honorable Mention and will be on display at the 2009 State Fair of Texas. It's one of my favorite images - a nostalgic piece that takes us back to an earlier era. The Ford pickup is from the mid-fifties - the gas pumps perhaps even older. I used digital manipulation to give the image a more ethereal feel.

Two White Chairs

"Two White Chairs"
I took this image in Bisbee, Arizona. Bisbee is a lovely little art town that was once dependent on mining for it's livelihood. Nestled in hills that are dotted with funky, picturesque cottages, Bisbee is now home to numerous galleries, shops, and studios. It was winter when I was there. These two white chairs, lying unused on this small balcony, seemed to be waiting for the doors to open and usher in spring.

Costa Rican Beauty

"Costa Rican Beauty"
Along the bumpy road to the Arenal Observatory Lodge, a bridge crosses the Arenal River. It is here that tourists and local Ticos gather to watch Volcan Arenal expel smouldering boulders the size of houses. Late one afternoon last June, this beautiful butterfly mesmerized five of us who shot frame after frame as it just sat peacefully on this rock. After checking every Costa Rican butterfly source I can find, asking a very knowledgeable Costa Rican guide, and looking through hundreds of photos on the net, it's identity remains unknown. So if anyone knows it's identity, please pass that information along.

Night Heron

"Night Heron"
This photograph of a Yellow-crowned Night Heron took first place in the photography division of the Grand Prairie Arts Council 2009 Open Juried Art Show now on display through September 25th in the Grand Prairie Memorial Library. I discovered him on one of my early morning walks at White Rock Lake earlier this summer. He was very tolerant and allowed me to get quite a few shots. This one is my favorite. Hope you enjoy it.

Looking for Breakfast

"Looking for Breakfast"
This image of a snowy egret hunting for breakfast was taken at White Rock Lake early one recent morning. I love walking at the lake in the early morning when the surface of the lake is like glass. Since the birds are intent on finding a meal, they are more tolerant of me snapping photos. I used a PhotoShop filter on this image to give it a softer, more painterly touch. Hope you enjoy it.

Self Portrait - 1967

"Self Portrait - 1967"
This is another piece I created for the TVAA Self Portrait Exhibition that is now on view in the TVAA Downtown Gallery (Plaza of the Americas, Suite G207, 700 N Pearl at San Jacinto, Dallas 75201) weekdays (10-4) through September. This is a mixed media piece that includes photographic images but did not begin as a photograph. It was a lot of fun to create in a different medium, and I hope to do more mixed media/collage type works in the future. I hope you enjoy this piece.
The Self Portrait Exhibition is quite interesting. Please join us for the reception on Saturday, September 12, from 2-4 pm in the Gallery.

Windows To Our Souls

"Windows To Our Souls"
This is one of the images I created for the TVAA Self Portrait exhibition that is currently showing at the TVAA Downtown Gallery. I based it on the idea that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Self portraits may be windows into the artist's inner being or perhaps an illusion created to present the artist as she/he wants to be seen. Whatever the motivation, artists have been creating self portraits since the emergence of art. The TVAA exhibit presents a variety of interpretations of the self portrait in many different mediums. Please join us for the reception: Saturday, September 12th from 2-4 in the TVAA Downtown Gallery, Plaza of the Americas, Suite G207, 700 N Pearl, Dallas 75201.

Green Heron

Green Heron

This is an image I recently took from my kayak at White Rock Lake. The little green heron was hunting for dinner along the edge of the lake at dusk. I enjoy photographing birds, but they are often not especially cooperative. This one was quite tolerant and willing to pose.
