Baltimore Oriole

" Baltimore Oriole"

This is another digitally manipulated image. I took this photograph of a female Baltimore Oriole from the back porch of our house in Costa Rica. She had been nibbling on insects on the leaves of this tree, and I snapped the shutter just as she took flight.

Pelican

Pelican

This image was taken today during my walk at White Rock Lake. I used digital manipulation to add color to the water since everything looked dull and gray this morning. I also wanted to give the entire image a more painterly effect. Hope you enjoy it!

Flight

"Flight"

This is another image from the back porch in Costa Rica. Buff-throated Saltators are about as common in our part of Cost Rica as Blue Jays are in Dallas. I manipulated this image to accentuate the sense of movement and give it a more abstract appearance. Hope you enjoy it!

Rufous-tailed Hummingbird

Rufous-tailed Hummingbird

Fifty varieties of hummingbirds are listed in "The Birds of Costa Rica". This rufous-tailed hummingbird lives in the north-central part of Costa Rica where our house is and spends most of the day drinking nectar from the hummingbird bushes that grow all along one side of the house. They are quite fearless for a creature that measures only around 4 inches in length. While sitting on the back porch, it's not unusual to be buzzed by one and then be fussed at because you happened to be in it's flight path.

Red-legged Honeycreeper

Red-legged Honeycreeper

This female red-legged honeycreeper is part of a group that spends most of the day eating papaya we put out near our back porch in Costa Rica. They are feisty little birds who often chase larger birds away. Once they peck through the outer skin, they stick their entire heads through the hole to get at the juicy meat inside.

Chestnut-Mandibled Toucan

Chestnut-Mandibled Toucan

Chestnut-mandibled toucans are frequent visitors to our little piece of Paradise in Alto Monterrey, Costa Rica. This one landed in a tree right beside our back porch...eyeing the papaya I had put in the bird feeder. It sat there for a while and then flew away, never touching the papaya. Perhaps it was put off by the flurry of activity around the feeder.

"Ford"

Another rusty truck image. This is the '53 Ford pickup I discovered parked along I35 in Salado not long ago. I used some digital techniques to make the colors of the rust more vibrant and the sky more interesting.

Flying Egret

"Flying Egret"
This is another of my early morning White Rock Lake images. It has been digitally manipulated to give more definition to the water and to the bird. Egrets feed along the edges of the lake in the early mornings and are often very tolerant of my "shooting". Even though they are very large birds, they are quite graceful in flight.

Red-winged Blackbird

"Red-winged Blackbird"

Each spring and summer the cattails along the edges of White Rock Lake provide housing for red-winged blackbirds. Males such as this one are everywhere, singing and performing their displays to attract females. This image has been digitally manipulated to give it a more ethereal, Oriental feel. It's one of my favorites.

'38 Ford #2

"'38 Ford #2"

Another of my favorite subjects - old rusty automobiles. This image is an abstract created from the old '38 Ford pickup I discovered on Boliver some time back. I still haven't been able to get back down that way to see if it was lost when Ike destroyed almost all of Boliver Peninsula. I guess some part of me hopes this old heap of metal survived, although in reality, I'm sure it's long gone....like so many things from that era.

Henny #11

"Henny #11"
This image is another of my favorite rusty automobile photographs. I discovered this old Henny Packard hearse sitting beside a souvenir shop in Tombstone, Arizona - but it had a Texas tag on it from the 50s or 60s. This shot was a finalist in the Photographer's Forum 2008 Best of Photography Annual.

Trashed

"Trashed"
Today's image is of an old International pickup - part of an International truck "graveyard" I discovered in East Texas a while back. Most of the trucks, like this one, have been there long enough for vegetation to grow up around and inside them. Old rusty cars, trucks, tractors - all favorites of mine for photography. This image was part of City Art Gallery's "Art and Garbage" show. Hope you enjoy it.

Sloth

"Sloth"

With a return to Costa Rica quickly approaching, I find myself thinking of that beautiful country and the wonderful wildlife found there. Perhaps my favorite creature from that part of the world is the sloth. Prehistoric in appearance, the sloth is a most unusual animal who spends most of it's life in the tops of trees. They move so slowly that all kinds of opportunistic organisms take up residence on their fur. Since sloths sleep most of the time, getting a good view of one's sweet face is a real treat.

Hutong Poodle

"Hutong Poodle"

For centuries city dwellers in China have lived in hutongs - little communities built around a common area. This Beijing hutong was comprised of ramshackled dwellings whose doors opened up onto a narrow alley leading to a communal restroom and showers. The hutongs stand in stark contrast to the newer high-rise apartment houses that are springing up in Beijing, and those who live in them are among the poorest of Chinese citizens. This perfectly coiffed poodle riding in the basket of this woman's bicycle seemed very out of place.

Kermitta

"Kermitta"
Since it's been raining for days here in Dallas, I thought I'd end the week with an image of a creature who may still be enjoying it. This bullfrog was photographed in a friend's pond a while back. I got the shot by lying on my stomach and leaning out over the edge of the pond. My efforts were rewarded with several good images. I prefer to think this frog is a female - hence the name "Kermitta".

City Garage

"City Garage"
This digitally manipulated photograph won an Honorable Mention and will be on display at the 2009 State Fair of Texas. It's one of my favorite images - a nostalgic piece that takes us back to an earlier era. The Ford pickup is from the mid-fifties - the gas pumps perhaps even older. I used digital manipulation to give the image a more ethereal feel.

Two White Chairs

"Two White Chairs"
I took this image in Bisbee, Arizona. Bisbee is a lovely little art town that was once dependent on mining for it's livelihood. Nestled in hills that are dotted with funky, picturesque cottages, Bisbee is now home to numerous galleries, shops, and studios. It was winter when I was there. These two white chairs, lying unused on this small balcony, seemed to be waiting for the doors to open and usher in spring.

Costa Rican Beauty

"Costa Rican Beauty"
Along the bumpy road to the Arenal Observatory Lodge, a bridge crosses the Arenal River. It is here that tourists and local Ticos gather to watch Volcan Arenal expel smouldering boulders the size of houses. Late one afternoon last June, this beautiful butterfly mesmerized five of us who shot frame after frame as it just sat peacefully on this rock. After checking every Costa Rican butterfly source I can find, asking a very knowledgeable Costa Rican guide, and looking through hundreds of photos on the net, it's identity remains unknown. So if anyone knows it's identity, please pass that information along.

Looking for Breakfast

"Looking for Breakfast"
This image of a snowy egret hunting for breakfast was taken at White Rock Lake early one recent morning. I love walking at the lake in the early morning when the surface of the lake is like glass. Since the birds are intent on finding a meal, they are more tolerant of me snapping photos. I used a PhotoShop filter on this image to give it a softer, more painterly touch. Hope you enjoy it.

Self Portrait - 1967

"Self Portrait - 1967"
This is another piece I created for the TVAA Self Portrait Exhibition that is now on view in the TVAA Downtown Gallery (Plaza of the Americas, Suite G207, 700 N Pearl at San Jacinto, Dallas 75201) weekdays (10-4) through September. This is a mixed media piece that includes photographic images but did not begin as a photograph. It was a lot of fun to create in a different medium, and I hope to do more mixed media/collage type works in the future. I hope you enjoy this piece.
The Self Portrait Exhibition is quite interesting. Please join us for the reception on Saturday, September 12, from 2-4 pm in the Gallery.

Windows To Our Souls

"Windows To Our Souls"
This is one of the images I created for the TVAA Self Portrait exhibition that is currently showing at the TVAA Downtown Gallery. I based it on the idea that the eyes are the windows to the soul. Self portraits may be windows into the artist's inner being or perhaps an illusion created to present the artist as she/he wants to be seen. Whatever the motivation, artists have been creating self portraits since the emergence of art. The TVAA exhibit presents a variety of interpretations of the self portrait in many different mediums. Please join us for the reception: Saturday, September 12th from 2-4 in the TVAA Downtown Gallery, Plaza of the Americas, Suite G207, 700 N Pearl, Dallas 75201.

Purple Iris

Purple Iris

I don't take as many flower photographs as I once did, but maybe I should. They are often one of the things we don't even notice in our busy daily routines. But they are so lovely, and most people love images of beautiful flowers. This iris was photographed in my yard last spring. I wanted just the one image to stand out, so I did some digital work on it to soften the background and enhance the flower. I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you have a great weekend.

Colors of Rust #1
This abstract image was created from the rusty fender of a 1957 Mercedes Benz that was parked beside a southern Oklahoma highway. Old rusty automobiles are one of my favorite photo subjects. This '38 Ford pickup caught my eye after driving off the ferry from Galveston to Boliver. Summer Palace Dock

Summer Palace Dock
Another image from China. The Summer Palace is reached by taking a "dragon boat" across a lake. As we approached the landing, my eyes were drawn to this charming dock where the boats are harbored for the night. I love the colors in this image - the bright golds of the smaller roofs contrasted with the dark grays of the larger ones, the deep red of the large building, and the red faded to pink on the smaller one. Mission Estrada

Mission Estrada

While Mission Estrada is the smallest of the missions along the San Antonio Mission Trail, to me, it has the most character. This image was taken early on a Sunday afternoon as people were still mingling outside after services. As the people chatted, the mission cat enjoyed the attention of the many children who were in attendance. Eventually the people wandered home, the cat napped on a low stone wall, and the Mission retreated into quiet.

Sampans

This is another image from my China series. These sampans were spotted as we cruised down the Yangtze River. Surprisingly, these were the only small boats we saw on the Yangtze that had sails. Most of the fishing boats and houseboats we saw were propelled by motors...another sign of the changes we saw in all the places we visited in China.

This image is included in the TVAA "Nonobjective" show that starts today at the TVAA Downtown Gallery and runs weekdays 10-4 through August 29th. This photo of two snow geese in flight is one of my favorites. I love how the wings of the two birds overlap and the softness of focus at the edges of the wings imply movement. Birds are the embodiment of power and grace.
